Welcome to Merilli Malta, the Blue-rock Thrush colour-ringing project! This is a research project led by ornithologists Dr Benjamin Metzger and Dr Marie Claire Gatt which aims to study the movement and breeding ecology of the Maltese national bird, Il-Merill.
The success of this work depends on public participation. If you are an avid birdwatcher, nature photographer, or simply intrigued by local biodiversity, you can be part of this project by observing and photographing Blue Rock-thrushes and reporting your colour-ring resightings.
See where we've been colour-ringing Blue Rock-thrushes and where you're most likely to spot one in the below interactive map.
While there's a good chance to see a ringed Blue Rock-thrush close to the site where it was ringed as an adult, both adults and young individuals may establish territories away from their site of first capture, so keep an eye out for colour-ringed birds wherever you are!
All birds were ringed by licensed bird-ringers of the BirdLife Malta Ringing Scheme.
